At a teacher retreat last spring, I was asked to write a This I Believe essay. This I Believe is a writing project modeled after Edward R. Murrow’s 1950′s radio program of the same name in which participants discussed “the core values that guide their daily lives.” Normally, I enjoy writing but that day I was stuck. By the end of the retreat, I’d put together something that was passable but only skimmed what was really going on in my head and my heart. On the drive home I realized that the project was asking me to reflect deeply about who I am and that deep reflection was something I’d been avoiding since Amy O died. I decided that if I wanted to participate honestly, I needed to talk about O. This comic is what I wrote later that night.
